They did it! The incredible team lead by Lewis Moody MBE have completed their headwest challenge!
Thursday 30 November - Saturday 10 December 2017
The team battled rapids, mountains, jungle, shark-infested waters, spiders, snakes, humidity, monsoon rains, altitude and everything else Costa Rica had to throw at them!
Thank you to everyone who sponsored the team, helping them to raise over £100,000 for headsmart.
Lewis says, “This is the third in a series of unique endurance challenges I have personally taken on for The Foundation. headwest will see myself and an inspiring team of men and women attempt to cover 300km over 8 days as we trek through jungle, cycle across mountains and raft along the rapids to cross Costa-Rica from the east to west coast.
Ever since I heard the horrifying fact that brain tumours are THE biggest cancer killer of children and adults, I have strived to push myself to my physical limits to raise funds to support the HeadSmart campaign. Sadly I have met too many people who's lives have been cut short by this devastating disease and it’s remembering these people and the lives of others that could be saved in the future that drives me forward.
The challenge will see us face extreme changing weather conditions and altitudes of over 2,300ms, pushing the team to our limits. But we know this is nothing compared to the challenges families have to deal with on a daily basis when they are faced with the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour.”
The challenge is fully funded so every penny the headwest team raises through sponsorship will go directly to the work funded by The Lewis Moody Foundation. One project we fund is the life-saving HeadSmart campaign to raise awareness of brain tumours in children and young people.
This is what mum Claire Lloyd told us, "Tuesday noon I saw the HeadSmart website and by lunchtime my son's tumour had been found and he'd had surgery. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - that information saved his life."
Oliver Highway was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012. He is a tremendous ambassador for The Foundation and recently attended the headwest launch to let the team know what a difference their fundraising can make to others. “It was great to be at the launch of The Lewis Moody Foundations headwest Challenge at Twickenham, talking to both those taking on this immense challenge and meeting the partners to the challenge at Y.CO. I am proud to volunteer my time to supporting The Lewis Moody Foundation and have particularly enjoyed being part of the headwest challenge as I know that every penny of the money being raised will help to reduce further the brain tumour diagnosis time for children and young adults through the lifesaving HeadSmart campaign. Together we are all striving to do this to increase the options for effective treatment and hopefully the very best possible outcomes for those diagnosed in the future. I know the team have an incredible £75,000 target and I would like to wish them all the very best of luck and to enjoy what looks like a great challenge! And when it gets tough out there remember my mantra; Look Forward, Be Positive and Keep Smiling"
Our very grateful thanks go to our headwest partners, yachting company Y.CO, and to our official kit suppliers to Viper10. The challenge is being run by challenge organisers Gane & Marshall with expedition leaders Alan Chambers and Wayne Hoyle.
