Vietnam to Cambodia Extreme Cycle Challenge

4 - 16 December 2016

A huge congratulations to Lewis and the headeast team who completed the gruelling 1000km cycle across Vietnam and Cambodia. Thank you to the companies that sponsored the team and everyone who generously donated, helping to raise almost £75,000 for the HeadSmart campaign.

The headeast Cycle Challenge, in aid of The Foundation, and in partnership with yachting company Y.CO, saw the challengers ride a total of 1,005km in just 11 days across steep and unforgiving terrain. The cyclists set off on 4 December, returning home on 16 December in time for Christmas.

Cycling up to 130km per day from Saigon, Vietnam, to Angkor Watt, Cambodia, the route included steep mountain climbs up to 1,500 metres above sea level, dense jungles and remote temples, in humid conditions and temperatures of 30-35ºC.

The challenge was a collaboration between former England Rugby Captain Lewis Moody MBE, polar explorer and adventurer Alan Chambers MBE and Y.CO, the challenger brand of the superyacht industry, following their headnorth extreme challenge to the North Pole in April 2015.

Lewis says: “I am so proud to be joined by this diverse team of guys who put themselves well out of their comfort zones to take on this challenge and raised a significant sum of money for The Foundation.

“Having just said goodbye to Steve George, a close friend and father to two young sons, who lost his fight against a brain tumour this November, I am reminded once again why I chose to set up The Lewis Moody Foundation.

“The money we will raise is sadly too late to help Steve but if it can save the life of just one child in the future by ensuring their brain tumour is diagnosed and treated straight away then we shall have achieved what we set out to accomplish.”

Thank you everyone who helped the team raise nearly £75,000 to help fund the award-winning HeadSmart campaign to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in young people and children. Earlier diagnosis saves lives as mum Claire Lloyd says: “Tuesday noon I saw the HeadSmart website and by lunchtime my son’s tumour had been found and he’d had surgery to relieve the hydrocephalus. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts – that information saved his life."

Y.CO Co-Founder & CEO Charlie Birkett says: “As a passionate advocate of Corporate Social Responsibility, Y.CO is very proud to support the headeast team as a partner in this extreme cycle challenge. The Lewis Moody Foundation is a fantastic charity and the HeadSmart campaign is doing hugely important work for a vital cause.”

"Viper 10 Sportswear are extremely proud to be the official kit supplier for the Y.CO headeast cycle this December. The challenge will raise funds for the Lewis Moody Foundation and this is something that Viper 10 is very passionate about supporting. We wish the team best of luck and we are excited to be a part of this extreme challenge!”

Meet the headeast team and see the blogs from their time away.
